If you’re taking on Commando, there’s one thing you can guarantee: you probably won’t finish looking the way you started. Mud, water, obstacles and crawling are all part of the experience. As an obstacle mud run, Commando is designed to get you out of your comfort zone, so prepare to get filthy.

PREPARE TO GET MUDDY
Start with clothes you don’t mind getting muddy. Commando is an obstacle mud run, so expect your kit to be covered in mud, soaked through and looking very different by the finish. Choose comfortable clothing you’ve trained in before, rather than wearing something brand new or your favourite running gear.
Plus, don’t forget that every Commando taking on the course will receive a top at registration so that’s one less item to think about!
Keep Your Clothing Comfortable
When it comes to tops and bottoms, choose fitted clothing that allows you to move freely. Avoid loose fabric, dangling straps or anything that could catch on an obstacle. Shorts, leggings and close-fitting tops are good options. Remember that wet, muddy clothing becomes heavier, so keeping things simple can help.

Choose the Right Shoes
Your shoes are one of the most important things to consider for an obstacle mud run. Trail or off-road running shoes with good grip are ideal for muddy, slippery and uneven sections. Make sure your shoes feel secure and comfortable, and wear them during training first. Never bring brand-new footwear.
Also keep in mind that they will get MUDDY, so don’t wear your ultimate faves unless you are prepared for them to look a little different to what the started!
Don't Forget Your Socks
Socks are easy to overlook, but they can make a big difference when you’re running, climbing and crawling through mud. Choose socks you’ve worn during training and know won’t rub or bunch up. It’s also worth packing a fresh pair for afterwards. Your feet will appreciate the clean, dry upgrade.

Are Gloves Worth Wearing?
Gloves are optional, but some participants prefer wearing them for obstacles involving ropes, climbing or crawling. If you choose gloves for your obstacle mud run, make sure they fit comfortably and still allow you to grip properly. Avoid anything bulky, and test them during training before race day for comfort.
Leave Your Valuables at Home
You probably won’t need many accessories for Commando, and leaving valuables at home is sensible. Watches, jewellery and anything precious can easily become covered in mud or damaged. Keep things simple and focus on the course ahead. You’ll have enough to think about without worrying about losing anything valuable.
We also have dedicated manned bag drops, so make sure you pack all your valuables in there so you can’t lose them on the course!

Pack a Change of Clothes
Don’t forget to pack something clean for afterwards. A spare outfit, fresh socks, underwear, a warm layer, a towel and a bag for your muddy kit can make a huge difference. After tackling an obstacle mud run, you might start wishing for a shower before anything else, and lucky for you there will be warm showers and a pint waiting for you at the finish line.
If you’ve forgotten anything, just visit the merch tent and grab yourself anything you’ve missed!
EMBRACE THE MUD
Most importantly, embrace the mud. There’s little point trying to stay spotless because Commando is built to get you out of your comfort zone. You’ll finish tired, muddy and grinning from ear to ear. Your kit might look very different at the finish, but that’s part of the bragging rights.

READY TO GET MUDDY?
So, wear something comfortable, choose footwear with plenty of grip, leave your best clothes at home and prepare to get a little muddy. An obstacle mud run is about taking on the challenge, getting stuck in and making it to the finish. At Commando, clean isn’t the goal. Finishing is, and those bragging rights are yours.
